Después de muchos años, los tiradores de Euskadi pudieron participar en el campeonato por selecciones, tras unos problemas de representatividad, y no sólo en el de clubes.
De éxito puede calificarse la participación de la Selección de Euskal Herria en los campeonatos del Mundo de Soka-Tira sobre goma celebrados en Castlebar (República de Irlanda) a finales de febrero. A nivel de clubs un total de cinco medallas para sus representantes, a nivel de Selecciones dos medallas y un cuarto puesto en su palmarés.
Hay que recordar que Euskadi no participaba en la categoría de selecciones por no admitir la Federación Internacional su inclusión como selección del País Vasco. Tras la sentencia del Tribunal Constitucional que permite la participación de selecciones de Nacionalidades o Regiones en Torneos y Campeonatos de carácter internacional, siempre que no participe a la vez la Selección Española, la situación se ha ido reconduciendo y Euskadi puede participar con su selección eso sí por el momento bajo el nombre e himno de la Federación Internacional.
En lo estrictamente deportivo en selecciones, los representantes de la Federación Vasca de Herri Kirolak se enfrentaron a China, China Taipei, Escocia, Inglaterra, Irlanda, Sudáfrica, Holanda, Italia, Suiza y Japón, con una cosecha de dos medallas de bronce y un cuarto puesto como mejores resultados. En clubes, la cantidad de metales llegó hasta cinco, como ya hemos apuntado anteriormente.
La fiesta que se vivió en Irlanda fue total. Compitieron multitud de clubes y hubo categorías que contaban con veinte equipos, como la de 600 kilos. Por Euskadi participaron equipos de Abadiño, Murueta, Gaztedi, Ibarra, Ñapurrak y Badaiotz.
En el último Campeonato de Euskal Herria Abadiño se llevó todos los títulos y era el equipo más potente de la delegación vasca. Abadiñoko Sokatira Taldea sumó una medalla de plata más a su palmarés. «En el Mundial no sabes nunca qué te vas a encontrar. Este año ha habido mucho nivel», apuntó su entrenador, Edu Mendizabal.
Las competiciones indoor ya han tocado a su fin y a partir de ahora los equipos se centrarán en la temporada de verano sobre hierba o outdoor. Este año el Campeonato del Mundo cruzará el charco y se celebrará a partir del 28 de agosto en Wisconsin, Estados Unidos.
